The activities of the European project SPINE - Smart Public transport Initiative for climate Neutral cities in Europe, of which the Foundation is an affiliated entity of the Municipality of Bologna along with 38 other beneficiaries, have entered their core phase.

The project aims to make public transport services more accessible, inclusive, and attractive for citizens by promoting intermodality and addressing the various needs of users.

In Bologna, work is being done on three intermodal Mobility Hubs located in Mazzini, Corticella, and Casteldebole.

In May, our Foundation was particularly involved in implementing three labs with three school classes (two primary and one middle) situated in these areas. The goal was to engage children in the co-creation of new signage to enhance the recognition of the future intermodal Centres, taking into account the needs of different metropolitan public transport users.

The school labs comprised three main phases:

1. An initial explanatory phase about the concept of intermodality, the aims of the SPINE project, and the planned activities, while also gathering initial feedback on the use of public transport.

2. A site visit to the future Mobility Center (Bologna Mazzini, Bologna Corticella, and Casteldebole SFM Stations), involving group observation activities using personas to understand and empathise with different needs and requirements.

3. Group co-design activities on:

  • Places: creating signage for places reachable from the Mobility Center through intermodality, at different distance scales with indications of travel times.
  • Games: designing possible ground games.
  • Signage: drawing horizontal signage with symbols to reach various transport modes.

The labs actively involved about 80 children across the three schools and yielded significant ideas and project insights that will be implemented in the development of the future Mobility Centers.
